How We Approach Utility Installation
Every utility installation project begins with a review of the civil utility plans. We confirm line locations, depths, materials, bedding requirements, and inspection hold points before any trenching begins. We also request utility locates — marking existing underground services to prevent conflicts during excavation. Utility installation is often sequenced alongside commercial site preparation or residential site preparation to avoid cutting into finished surfaces later.

Do I need permits for underground utility installation in North Carolina?
Yes, in virtually all cases. Water and sewer connections require permits from the local municipality or county. Contact us to discuss permit requirements for your project — work never starts without the appropriate permit in hand.
How deep do water and sewer lines need to be installed?
In Central North Carolina, water lines are typically installed at a minimum of 18–24 inches below finished grade. Sewer lines are installed at the depth required to maintain proper gravity flow, which varies by site topography. We install to the depths specified in the project’s utility plans and confirmed with the inspecting authority.
What is utility locating and why is it required before trenching?
Before any trenching begins, NC 811 must be notified and all existing underground utilities in the work area marked. This identifies the location of existing water, sewer, gas, electric, and telecom lines so they aren’t damaged during excavation. We place the locate request as part of our pre-work setup on every job, no exceptions.
Can you install utilities at the same time as site grading?

What testing is required after utility installation?
Water lines require pressure testing. Sanitary sewer lines require mandrel testing and often low-pressure air testing. Storm drainage systems are visually inspected and may require water testing of structures. We complete all required tests prior to backfilling inspection zones and provide documentation to the owner or inspecting authority.
